Have you ever wondered where the middle of the world is? Or, have you ever dreamed of going to a place where the mountains round the city and the Amazon cleans the air? Let us introduce you to… Ecuador, our beautiful, biodiverse and magical home: the place where Waku is born.
Ecuador is a small but diverse South American country with warm and cozy weather and incredible landscapes. With the Andes Mountains and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador is one of the top tourist destinations in South America. Tourists from the United States and most parts of Europe and Asia can visit without needing a visa for up to 90 days! It may not surprise you to find out that the country is called this because the equator runs through it. In fact, Ecuador is the only country in the world named after a geographical feature.
Now, why are we talking about how cool, wonderful and interesting Ecuador is? Well, there is a city called Loja, located in the Chuquiribamba valley in the south of the country, this city shares the border with Peru in the south. Loja holds a rich tradition in the arts, and for this reason is known as the Music and Cultural Capital of Ecuador. The city has a population of about 181,000, and is situated 2060 m (6758 ft) above sea level. And right there, on a magical spot somewhere in South America, is where Waku was born.
The Waku founders Nico and Juan worked hard for years searching for the best place to gather everything they needed to prepare the ultimate prebiotic herbal tea without hurting or affecting the land from which those ingredients ought to be obtained.
Every bottle of Waku is made with a powerful botanical blend that has anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits. This is a centuries-old Ecuadorian recipe locally known as "horchata lojana" that has been consumed for generations in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador because of its gut-health benefits and delicious taste. Not only are Waku’s ingredients sustainably obtained, they are also a hundred percent natural, organic and pure. Waku works with farmers in Loja, Ecuador to collect, squeeze, mix and pour all of the plants used to prepare the teas and make the smoothest and most natural blend possible.
Did you know that up to 50% of Ecuadorian farmers live under the poverty line? This means that farmers like Miguel, one of our farmer partners, were living with less than $2,80 USD a day.
By cutting the middleman and sourcing all of our herbs directly from smallholder farmers, together, we’re helping tackle this problem by increasing the income of the families we work with. At the moment, Waku works with 20 Ecuadorian families that help us plant, grow and brew our ingredients sustainably and receive a fair pay for their work and effort. By generating hundreds of jobs, we are also helping those communities sustain and grow with respect and understanding of their heritage and its importance.
We work with those farmers with a fair trade agreement, offering them the chance to put the ingredients they source on a delicious drink that will showcase the incredible benefits of the recipe internationally. Every step of our process is carefully executed to take care and maintain the Ecuadorian lands and resources in their most optimal conditions.
By buying our prebiotic herbal teas and supporting our business, not only are you improving your gut and overall health, you are also getting a chance to experience one of the most beneficial ancestral Ecuadorian traditions.
As a company with hispanic heritage and deep roots in our country, we are proud to showcase a product made by hard working hands that care for wellness, respect nature and love their country. Waku is the only tea in the US market that includes prebiotic fiber and therefore possesses this incredible extra benefit. Our prebiotic Herbal teas are not only made with all-natural ingredients, they are also vegan, GMO free, caffeine free and sugar free!
That is why we have worked so hard so that Waku can be the most delicious and refreshing beverage you choose to drink on a daily basis, while also working on making it as beneficial and healthy as possible without decreasing its quality or flavor. We are committed to improving lives back home while also sharing a small piece of our culture, values and ancestral natural secrets.
If you've ever tried Waku, thank you. We wouldn't be able to do this without your loyalty, help and support. Thank you for giving us a chance and for daring to experience the feeling of sunrise on the inside.
